Is Your Organisation Chatgpt-Ready?

I am sure we all have had a moment of excitement imagining the endless possibilities with ChatGPT as a creative lyric generator or the otherworldly artwork created by Midjourney only after writing short prompts in everyday English. The advancements in Generative AI are a game-changer, and the impact they will have on businesses is undeniable. Because of this, major AI solution providers, such as Google and Microsoft, are going head-to-head in the most recent technology battle.

The cutting-edge technology of Generative AI offers businesses a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tap into new revenue streams, boost operational efficiency, and drive game-changing innovation. But make no mistake; like any double-edged sword, it also presents its risks. As a visionary leader, embracing this innovation while proactively mitigating potential risks is crucial to stay ahead of the curve.

As a data science director at the Australian Taxation Office, one of my priorities is to empower my team for success in this new landscape. With over 20,000 staff, people are the backbone of our organisation. Ensuring they are equipped to work effectively with the latest technology is the key to unlocking our team's full potential. From providing comprehensive training on the usage and limitations of AI to shaping career paths and creating new roles and positions, when necessary, the investment we make in our team today, will pay dividends tomorrow.

“The future belong to those who prepare for it today”

Moreover, processes and platforms must also be in place for organisations to reap the benefits of modern AI. At the Australian Taxation Office, we have been investing in modern infrastructure, updating existing systems, and adopting new designs to integrate AI-powered solutions into existing architecture seamlessly. As the data world evolves rapidly, it is essential to bring the data governance framework to the next level, ensuring that data privacy, security, and ethical considerations are all considered.

The adage holds true, "the future belong to those who prepare for it today." And with AI advancing at an unprecedented pace, the future is quickly becoming the present. Today, decision-makers must envision all forms of AI, including generative models, as a cornerstone of their business for the years ahead. This may involve establishing a dedicated AI team, partnering with AI providers, and identifying innovative use cases that align with the organisation's objectives. For example, at the Smarter Data team of the Australian Taxation Office, we seek to exploit our data-rich environment to collect more than $500 billion in taxes annually. To stay ahead of the curve, it is also crucial for us to continuously evaluate and adjust our approach as the technology matures.

In conclusion, by preparing our people, modernising our platforms, planning strategically for the future in the long run, organisations of any size can leverage the opportunity and reduce the risk of the new forms of AI. Remember, AI will not change any business, per se. But those leaders who adopt it will shape their organisations, influences their industries, and build their future.
